Could you benefit from a dental crown? Reston, VA, dentists Dr. Monica Neshat and Dr. Joy Jang of Reston Family & Cosmetic Dentistry dental crownsdiscuss crowns and explain how they're used.

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are tooth-shaped restorations that are hollow in the center. They slide over a tooth after it has been prepared. Dental crowns are made of durable materials that look like natural tooth enamel, such as porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin or ceramic. After your tooth is prepared, we'll make an impression of your mouth in our Reston office and send it to a dental laboratory for fabrication. You'll leave the office with a temporary crown, but return in about two weeks to receive your permanent crown.

When are crowns used?

Crowns are a very versatile restoration and are often used to:

  • Restore Damaged Teeth: Crowns offer an excellent way to restore teeth that have fractured. Breaks can occur due to cracks in teeth, or might happen if you experienced a blow to the mouth or have fragile or weak teeth. Crowns restore the full height and width of your tooth, improving your appearance and eliminating eating issues.
  • Protect At-Risk Teeth: Dental crowns also prevent fragile teeth from fracturing. Cracks can form in teeth after years of wear or tear, or if you happen to bite into a very hard food or object. Even the smallest cracks weaken teeth and may eventually lead to fractures if the teeth aren't covered with crowns. Teeth may also become brittle with age, or may weaken if you've had a large filling or root canal therapy.
  • Improve the Appearance of Teeth: Adding a crown to a tooth can completely alter its appearance. Crowns are often used to improve the appearance of oddly shaped or crooked teeth and hide discolorations. The restorations can also length a naturally short tooth or improve the height of a tooth worn down by grinding.
  • Replace Missing Teeth: Crowns are added to dental implants to create a brand new tooth. Your new implants bond to your jawbone, creating strong, effective root replacements. Once the implants are securely bonded, they're connected to crowns to complete the implant process.
