When tooth loss occurs, it's only natural to feel a little self-conscious about the way you look. After all, society places great emphasis on a full, bright smile. Luckily, dental implants provide an excellent way to replace your lost tooth. Reston, VA dentists, Dr. Monica A. Neshat and Dr. Joy C. Jang of Reston Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, explain how implants can help you.
Dental implants get to the root of the problem
Bridges or dentures effectively replace missing teeth, but these dental appliances sit on your gums, which can make them less stable. If they're loose or don't fit well, they can irritate your gums and make it more difficult to bite and chew food. Because implants replace your tooth roots, they're much more stable.
When you receive an implant, your Reston dentist will drill a small hole in your jawbone and place the titanium implant inside. Titanium is an excellent material for implants because it easily fuses to bone. Over the next three to six months, your implant will bond to your jawbone. Once that process is complete, your dentists will connect a crown to the implant with a connector called an abutment.
Implants can replace one tooth or all of them
Implants are an excellent choice if you've lost one tooth, several teeth or all of your teeth. Implant-supported dentures are a good alternative to traditional dentures and are more comfortable.
Dental implants act just like regular teeth
Dental implants feel so much like your regular teeth that you may almost forget which tooth is actually an implant. When you have an implant, you can eat anything you want. If you have traditional dentures, you'll experience a decrease in biting power that will affect your ability to eat hard foods.
Implant care is easy
After you receive your implant, you'll continue to brush and floss as usual. Your dentist may recommend that you use interdental brushes to make sure you thoroughly clean the area around your implant.
